Employee Engagement Spotlight: October 2026

Learn: The Power of Everyday Recognition

Our recent employee engagement survey highlighted an opportunity to strengthen how employees experience recognition and appreciation at Â鶹´«Ã½AV. Building a culture of appreciation doesn't necessarily require new programs or resources. It begins with intentional, everyday interactions that remind our colleagues their contributions matter.

Feeling valued and appreciated is an essential part of employee engagement. While formal recognition programs have their place, some of the most meaningful moments of appreciation happen through simple, everyday interactions.

Effective recognition doesn't need to be elaborate, but it should be specific, timely, and sincere. Acknowledging someone's contribution shortly after it occurs, explaining what they did well, and sharing why their efforts mattered can make recognition more meaningful.

Try This:

Everyone can make appreciation a habit. This month, challenge yourself to recognize three colleagues whose contributions make a difference to you, your team, or our students.

    • Make it specific. Rather than simply saying “great job,” identify what the person did and why it mattered.
    • Make it timely. Don’t wait for a performance evaluation or formal recognition opportunity. Acknowledge contributions when they happen.
    • Make it public. Take a moment during a team or department meeting to recognize a colleague’s contributions. Public appreciation can reinforce behaviors, celebrate shared successes, and encourage a culture of recognition. Be mindful that some colleagues may appreciate private recognition.
    • Look beyond your immediate team. Recognize someone whose work supports your success but may not always be visible.

Recognition can be as simple as a thoughtful email, a handwritten note, a few words during a team meeting, or a brief conversation. What matters most is that it’s genuine and meaningful.

Small gestures can have a lasting impact. A culture of appreciation is built one interaction at a time.

Engagement In Action: Building Community Through Service

A strong university community is built through the connections we make, the relationships we develop, and the opportunities we create to work together beyond our everyday responsibilities.

On September 18, Â鶹´«Ã½AV's Faculty Senate and Staff Council organized a faculty and staff service project at Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello. The event provided an opportunity for employees from across the university to come together in service to the broader community.

Community service initiatives like this create opportunities for faculty and staff to connect outside their usual roles, build relationships across departments, and strengthen their shared sense of purpose. They also reinforce the important role Â鶹´«Ã½AV plays in the community beyond our campuses.

Thank you to Faculty Senate and Staff Council for their leadership in creating opportunities that bring our university community together.
