Liquid Nitrogen in Boiling Water

Brief Description

This demonstration is a small version of the popular “cloud bomb” demo. Liquid nitrogen is poured into a beaker with boiling water. The liquid nitrogen evaporates when it comes into contact with the boiling water. This leaves behind cold nitrogen gas which causes the moisture in the air to condense, making a little cloud.

Materials

Heat resistant gloves, safety goggles, Pyrex beaker, propane stove, lighter, styrofoam cup, liquid nitrogen, and liquid nitrogen funnel.

Set-up

Fill up the Pyrex beaker about two thirds of the way with water. Bring it to a boil using the propane stove. It is a good idea to throw it in the microwave first to save propane. Right before the demonstration, pour a little bit of liquid nitrogen into a styrofoam cup.

Performing the Demo

When ready to perform the demonstration, make sure you are wearing safety goggles and pour the liquid nitrogen into the boiling water.

Safety

When handling boiling water and liquid nitrogen it is important to wear proper safety gear. Namely, welder’s gloves (or other thick, insulated gloves) and safety goggles.
