About the HVAC team
Our certified and dedicated HVAC team maintains and services the University's heating/cooling mechanical systems to ensure comfortable indoor temperatures and reliable climate control across campus. Their expertise helps keep critical systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably year-round.
In addition to supporting campus buildings, the team provides maintenance and repair for specialized equipment serving academic departments, housing facilities, and auxiliary operations through submitting an E-Works Request.
Interesting Facts:
- Despite their age, Colonial Hall, built in 1925, and the Administration Building, built in 1939, still operate with portions of their original heating and cooling equipment, a testament to the durability and longevity of these historic systems.
About the Heat Plant team
The Central Heating Plant provides steam to approximately 40 campus buildings for heating, hot water, and steam-powered equipment. Our Heat Plant team closely monitors the steam system and plant equipment to ensure everything operates safely, efficiently, and with precision. Their expertise keeps the campus heating infrastructure running reliably.
The plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the heating season, typically from mid-September through June. Steam is distributed through approximately two miles of underground steam tunnels that serve the campus. After use, nearly 80% of the steam is returned to the plant as condensate, where it is recycled into water and reused to generate new steam, supporting both operational efficiency and resource conservation.
Interesting Facts:
- Before 1947, the university's steam plant was housed in the Liberal Arts Building. In 1947, the current steam plant was constructed, and remarkably, two of its original boilers remain in operation today, continuing to provide reliable service to campus.
